How to Help Children Plan the Holidays: A Day Crafting Guide

Updated: Jul 23

Wondering how Day Crafting can make your children's holiday days more organised and fun? Asking, 'What do you want to do today?' might seem simple, but it can actually be quite a thoughtful challenge. My 10-year-old daughter and I co-developed this tool to help spark creative ideas and make their days more enjoyable.

This quick exercise takes place at the start of the holiday and offers prompts and structure to help you make the most of your time. During lockdown, my daughter learned how to plan and time-block her days, which significantly improved family harmony and well-being. Scheduling isn’t just useful for work; it can also enhance your holiday experience. Instead of turning holiday days into just a series of chores, these tools actually create a framework that encourages freedom and a natural flow of activities.

The Practice

In a notebook or on a page to stick on the fridge, generate answers to the following questions.

  1. One big project

  2. Two things to get better at

  3. Three people to hang out with

  4. Four local adventures

  5. Five things to get totally absorbed doing

  6. Six ways to help out around the house

  7. Seven sensory pleasures, e.g. yummy foods

This can either become a tick list once you've done them or you can design progress bars to colour for the longer term items. Use your imagination.
